Fluorescence-Activated Cell Sorting is an advanced type of flow cytometry used to sort heterogeneous mixtures of living cells based on their light scattering properties and the fluorescent labeling of the cells. Suspensions of these cells are contained in a fast-moving narrow liquid stream, through which vibrations break the liquid stream into single droplets. Before oscillation, the liquid stream can be passed through one or more laser beams to identify the fluorescence patterns of individual cells. This liquid stream is further divided into droplets based on the properties selected in the initial fluorescence analysis. These droplets then pass through an array of electrostatic deflectors. This deflector diverts a droplet in a well or test tube depending on the charge.
