Global Vitamin D Market Size, Share & Trends Analysis Report by Type (Vitamin D2, Vitamin D3), by Application (Functional Food & Beverage, Pharma, and Personal Care), By End User (Children, Adult, and Pregnant Women), Forecast Period (2022-2028)

The global vitamin D market is expected to grow at a significant CAGR of 6.7% during the forecast period (2022-2028).  Increased awareness of vitamin D insufficiency, increased rates of osteoporosis in women, and increased cases of malnutrition in children are driving the Vitamin D market. The vitamin D2 segment is expected to grow at a faster CAGR during the forecast period. Vitamin D, also known as the sunshine vitamin, is linked to bone and muscular health, and its importance in maintaining healthy immune system function is becoming increasingly apparent. Despite its relevance to health and well-being, vitamin D deficiency is a common global health problem, with more than 80% of the world’s population having sub-optimal vitamin D levels. Even in sunny Australia, the Australian Bureau of Statistics estimates that one in every five persons is vitamin D deficient, with another 43% having sub-optimal levels.

Yeast and mushrooms are good sources of vitamin D2. Plants produce vitamin D2; the body produces vitamin D3 when the skin is exposed to ultraviolet (UVB) radiation from the sun, and it can also be obtained from the skin of animals such as sheep and cows. Vitamin D2 prevents rickets and relieves osteomalacia, hypoparathyroidism (abnormal functioning of the parathyroid glands), and hypophosphatemia (low levels of phosphate in the blood) (low levels of phosphate in blood). Vitamin D2 can have a higher risk of toxicity than vitamin D3 due to its lesser stability and increased contaminants in the extraction process.

The key companies operating in the industry are highly inclined toward the adoption of different growth strategies including capacity expansion, partnerships, mergers and acquisitions, geographical expansion, new product launches, FDA Approval, and product innovation to remain competitive in the marketplace. For instance, in September 2021, with the launch of Nutrilite Vitamin D Plus1, Amway India has bolstered its presence in the Food for Special Dietary Use (FSDU) arena, which is aimed at those with damaged bones. Its patented botanical blend of quercetin and organically derived licorice, along with Vitamin D3, Vitamin K2, and a patented botanical blend of quercetin and organically sourced licorice, was created for people with compromised bones.

The licorice and quercetin extract combination, a one-of-a-kind proprietary substance, promotes bone density and collagen production, which stimulates bone growth. In March 2021, DSM announced the launch of ampli-D, a fast-acting version of vitamin D for dietary supplements, in Australia. Ampli-D is a faster and more effective solution for Australian customers to promote immunological health by increasing vitamin D levels in the body in days and weeks rather than months. Following regulatory approval by Australia’s Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) for use in dietary supplements that do not require a doctor’s prescription, DSM’s ampli-D is available in Australia.
