High voltage direct current (HVDC) power systems use direct current (DC) to transmit large amounts of power over long distances. HVDC lines can transfer power faster by improving transmission line efficiency. The AC voltage generated at the transmitting end of an AC and DC combined system is converted to DC. In AC transmission, alternating waves of voltage and current travel along a line and change direction every millisecond, resulting in heat loss. Unlike AC lines, voltage and current waves in DC do not change direction. HVDC lines can transfer power faster by improving transmission line efficiency. Above the break-even point, HVDC is cheaper to transmit than HVAC. Compared to HVAC, HVDC transmission lines have lower power dissipation. HVDC has no radiated or induced losses. HVDC has no dielectric loss, which increases the life of the conductor.
