Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) is a wastewater treatment process designed to remove liquid waste from a system. This is to achieve zero emissions at the end of the wastewater management cycle to ensure that liquid waste does not leave facility boundaries. It is a gradual wastewater treatment process consisting of reverse osmosis, ultrafiltration, evaporation/crystallization and partial electrodeionization. There are two types of zero liquid discharge systems: conventional ZLD systems and hybrid ZLD systems. Conventional ZLD systems include falling film brine concentrators, vertical tube vertical tube evaporators (seed slurry concentrators) and seedless evaporators, forced circulation crystallizers, horizontal spray film evaporators, filter presses, centrifuges and drum dryers for sludge dewatering. In addition, the hybrid ZLD system includes an integrated automation system with membrane pre-concentrator and thermal/evaporation technology.
